Nature’s Winter Craft Store – Free Gathered Goodies
onDecember 26, 2013
The weather inspired me to take a walk in our beautiful parks and gather some green and brown goodies to decorate with. I still like to celebrate winter once the holiday decorations go back into hiding. I know some of you probably put out seashells and pictures of beaches though. I get that too. 🙂
I made lots of cool things with my gathered goodies…
To make garland out of pinecones, cut a long string of hemp twine about three times as long as you want the finished product to be. Start about 8-10 inches from the end of the twine and wrap the twine around the pinecone. Wrap it where the scales become too tight to put string through. Stuffing the twine down into these tight scales will keep it in place. The rough texture of hemp twine also helps keep the pinecones where they need to be.
Pull the twine taught. Then keep stringing the rest of your pinecones close together. You could tie a knot on each pinecone or place a dab of glue where the hemp meets if you are worried about them staying in place.
You can use a similar process to make a pinecone wreath. Start with a grapevine wreath and lots of floral wire pieces about 6 inches long. Wrap pinecones with the wire pieces and tie on individually as close together as you can.
While you’re gathering pinecones make sure to grab a big handful of branches, greenery, and sticks to make an arrangement. Be careful about gathering any berries though, many of them are poisonous to people and pets.
